In
the Box Thinking: Succeeding on Purpose and with Clear Intent I
dont believe in Out-of-the-Box Thinking. Thats why I wrote this
quick, 42-page book on what I call "in-the-box leadership."Ive worked with hundreds of leaders over the years throughout the United States who have confused the original spirit of out-of-the-box thinkingwhich was to encourage an open, can-do culture that rewarded innovation and creativity, taking intelligent risks and imagining a better future. Today, the concept of out-of-the-box thinking has been so diluted that it has evolved into what has become more of an abdication of leadership rather than the innovation it was originally intended to inspire. One needs to go no further than Enron, WorldCom or the countless other out-of-the-box, high-risk, high-reward cultures to see that in fact people do need clearly articulated form and structure in the workplace. Perhaps the most important job of a leader is to set expectations for how we get work done around here. This cant be done by simply saying think outside the box, giving a gratuitous pat on the back and then expecting results to magically appear. How people generate results is as important as the results they generate! This short, to the point book is different in that it advocates the merits of IN-the-box thinking and how leaders can create success in their organizations on purpose, rather than by accident. It demonstrates the importance of not putting employees through the mental gymnastics that often come from a color outside the lines corporate mentality. Yes, it is possible to think inside the box and still sustain a creative, innovative culture where people and ideas can flourishand employees, customers, shareholders can reap the rewards. Who should read In the Box Thinking: Succeeding on Purpose and with Clear Intent? Anyone in a position to influence productivity inside a company. Anyone who leads teams or projects. Anyone who cares about the development of his or her people in the workplace. Anyone who expects to contribute in a meaningful way to the vision and mission of his or her organization. In short: You! The book works as great gift or as part of your national meeting, or leadership retreat. Its a fast read and packed with insightful thoughts about how to energize teams and entire companies. |
