This About ThatArchives

What you don’t have in common with Plato or Giuliani.

Leadership is big business. Roughly 2,000 books a year are written on the subject—each with its own version of the “good stuff”—the “latest and greatest”, the “simple truths”, “what every leader must know”—point of view. Publishers and their authors have successfully repackaged everyone from Plato to Giuliani as the greatest leadership gurus our world has seen—with the implied message that “you, too, can or should be a leader like them”.

In many ways, leadership has been used and abused—commoditized and capitalized to the point of ambiguity and absolute clutter. What a shame—to have turned something so important into something so seemingly gratuitous.

So here’s my point of view—my “simple truth”, my tid-bit that “every leader must know”:

No, you can’t be a leader like Plato. And you can’t be a leader like Giuliani. Why? You’re not Plato and you’re not Giuliani—you are you. You lead like none other. You have your own unique significance that, if developed and committed to, would positively rival any of the “brand name” leaders the publishing world and their authors have manufactured.

The message here: Stop trying to be like someone else and focus on being more like you. From all the books you may have read and the dozens more you’re likely to read on the subject, take time to develop your own point of view—one that is a reflection of who you are and what you believe in.

Start by asking yourself this very simple, straight forward question: Why would anyone want to be led by you?

Don’t answer now. Think about it. Work on it. Make it real.

If you’re looking to create a short list of prospective consultants to assist your company, one area you’re sure to be concerned with is content quality.

We take content very seriously.

We believe our workshops and various other deliverables must be of the highest quality and have real world application. Yesterday’s leadership and motivational techniques are old and tired. You and your company deserve the most current perspectives possible.

In order to provide clients with fresh insight on leadership, management, motivation and performance, we maintain close relationships with real people who are out there "getting it done" everyday. These are people we call "Vigilant Leaders". Some are well known. Others are unsung heros who have made a difference and are absolutely relentless in their pursuit of leadership excellence.

In addition to researching the many books that deal with leadership related subject matter, we often conduct site visits at companies who we feel offer uncommon excellence in leadership, culture and overall people management and motivation. Vigilant also keeps an extensive library of highly regarded periodicals that provide added focus and insight.

Our Vigilant Leaders provide a wealth of real-world information and unique leadership approaches to workplace development. This becomes the taproot for all workshop and program content. We marry our research findings to the specific issues facing our client companies, thereby creating a customized, highly memorable experience.

Each month, through a series of hard-hitting questions, we spotlight a Vigilant Leader who is making or has made a positive difference for his or her company. You can read the unedited interviews right here on the Vigilant website.
